The success and failure of any business
finds reflection in whether the industry
has employed the right people or was
forced to rely on the unskilled ones. The
garment industry is perhaps even more
dependent on ‘human capital’ for success
than other big ticket enterprises as people
are central to all activities in this industry
and their competence, level of motivation
and passion drives growth. While the core
theme at this year’s edition of OGTC was
“Innovate, Integrate, Motivate,” the central
theme that emerged was ‘People’ as they
are the immediate reason for achieving
or missing goals. It was highlighted by
most speakers at the conference that no
organization can grow if the people who
make the organization are not tuned
into what the organization is expecting
out of them.

Sustainability is all about ‘people’, ‘planet’ and ‘profit’, all of which are now ‘scarce’. While, industry makes effort to take steps for ‘people’, ‘planet’ and ‘profit’ is something which is shrinking by the day with no one having a clear vision how to perk up the same for sustainable existence. Limiting overheads, cost control efforts and sharp costing are already being used as tools to improve margins, but are the export houses doing enough on these fronts, is there still some scope for improvement, are some questions that need to be asked.
