Report on 6th OGTC Annual Function

6th OGTC Annual Function was organized at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on the evening of 16th July – 2010 where Mr. Manfred Habig, Head, Sustainable Economic Development, GTZ India graced the occasion as Guest of Honour.

Welcoming Mr. Manfred OGTC president Mr. P M S Uppal said that we are proud to have GTZ as our knowledge partner for the OGTC International Conference and we are also working together on a number of development initiatives.

Mr. Uppal also welcomed eminent persons and guests present at the function including Mr. Dhananjay Kumar, Director NIFT, Mr. Suresh Yadvendra, Director MSME Institute and Mr. Praveen Nayyar, “Senior Vice Chairman of AEPC.

Mr. Uppal said that Garment Industry is a growing industry and needs trained manpower at every level and more so at the grass root level. He said that to provide skilled hands, OGTC in association with IL & FS has set up Training Centre with a target to train 3000 sewing operators per year.

Mr. Uppal also referred to various development and Training Project being under taken to improve the productivity.

Mr. R. C. Kesar, Director OGTC made a presentation titled "Responsible business"- OGTC Leads the Way" Mr. Kesar said that in a study by Third Eye Sight it has been brought out that NCR has potential to increase its Garment Exports by 7500 crores annually .To achieve that companies would need to be competitive and for which the company needs to have a strategy , improve operational efficiencies and invest in training .

OGTC is working for building competitiveness and simultaneously be a responsible business. To achieve this OGTC is working for operations improvement through Lean, PIP, QIP, HR –Change Management, Innovative Financing, Common Sourcing etc.

He said that earlier there were 3 stake holders but now Society is the fourth and critical stake holder.

As responsible business OGTC has targeted reduction of 2000 tons of Carbon Equivalent in next three years and while abolishing child labour in their factories and supply chain OGTC members have gone beyond and are now facilitating their training along with NGOs so that as soon as they attain the legal age they have adequate vocational training to start their journey.

Mr. Kesar also highlighted the skill up gradation programme under taken last 5 years where more than 10,000 persons have been trained.

OGTC Plans:

In addition to current initiatives OGTC plans to add Supply chain initiatives for the quality and productivity in process houses and training and development of vendors and job operators.

In the end he thanked GTZ, AEPC, MSME Development Institute for their cooporation and support to OGTC.

Mr. Manfred and Mr. Praveen Nayyar released the Vol. XII of the OGTC Newsletter.

Mr. M.K. Mehra, Jt. Director explained that how Lean Manufacturing Project under the Ministry of MSME has been introduced in 8 member factories. OGTC is the only cluster from the Garment Industry for speedy and effective implementation the MSME Scheme.

Mr. Mehra said it has taken over 2 years to bring awareness and plan for Lean Project. The first awareness programme was arranged in 2007 and a workshop by Mr. Charles Dagher in 2008. In 2009 the mapping was carried out and the Lean Manufacturing Project started in mid 2009. The OGTC decided to give awards to Lean participants for their achievement and to motivate them.

Mr. Manfred awarded the momentos and Mr. Praveen Nayyar gave away the cash reward.

The two best units for overall good performance were awarded Trophy and cash prize of Rs. 25,000/- each.

Mr. Praveen Nayyar in his address lauded the activities of OGTC and said that OGTC is the role model for the entire Garment Industry of the country. He said that a large number of activities are being organized by OGTC and companies have to be on the run to keep pace with it.

Mr. Gautam Nair MD, Matrix Clothing in his remark said that I have been watching OGTC closely since inception and very much impressed with the overall good performance and now I have joined the team for active participation.

The guest of honour Mr. Manfred in his address said that he is honoured to associate himself with OGTC Annual Function He said he has great attachment to Garment Industry for last 50 years since his mother was tailor.

He further said that OGTC believes in collective thinking and is open to accept new initiatives and fast to adopt change according to the present challenges. GTZ association with OGTC since 2007. He said that the both organization worked together in the field of productivity improvement, Quality Improvement and environment friendly activity such as energy audit and carbon footprints.

OGTC has taken lead in this environment friendly project. He said that India is a fast growing economy and world is looking to India as a hub of manufacturing.

Now India has also introduced its own currency symbol. GTZ and OGTC will continue to work for the growth of SME sector. He congratulated OGTC for instituting such awards for employees which is unique and a good step for motivating the employees. He thanked OGTC for giving the opportunity to meet members.

Mr. Gunish Jain proposed vote a thanks to guests of Honour Mr. Manfred and Mr. Praveen Nayyar and to all guest for their active participation He expressed his gratitude to faculty members for their contribution. Programme was followed by Dinner.
